What is hotter than a international swimsuit model? A international swimsuit model that boxes of course! This week we got to talk to the fun-loving, awesome, and beautiful Avril Mathie! She has tons of incredible accomplishments under her belt already and she is just getting started! She’s about the take over the industry!

Check out our interview with Avril below!

HealthGreatness: How did you get into fitness?
Avril: I had always been athletic in school, but after I graduated I literally did nothing other than the odd bit of running here and there. Lack of exercise, poor diet and drinking a lot between the ages of 17-21 caused me to put on about 22 lbs in 6 months at the end there, when I was travelling through Europe. When I came home I tried everything I knew to lose the weight… Starving myself, running and fat pills. I was still drinking a lot of alcohol though and so it wasn’t really going as planned haha. Around that time I met my now ex-husband Mark Mathie, who had been in the fitness industry nearly 15 years (at that stage) training elite athletes, celebrities etc in London, Europe and around the world. He introduced me to the gym and educated me on nutrition and other lifestyle factors and that was how I entered the fitness world.

HealthGreatness: As a boxer and model, how often do you workout and what does your routine look like?
Avril: At the moment I’m actually taking a break from fighting (hoping to get back into it next year!) so I train once a day, 5-6 days per week. Three of those sessions are boxing/sparring, I usually do one long (really slow) run, one shorter faster run and one resistance/plyometric type session. But it varies from week to week and depends if I’m home or overseas, what the weather is doing etc. I always do something though… No excuses 😉

I also make sure I do a gentle yoga session and get a massage once a week and try to stretch a few times daily with my PT clients. And have a day off each week. Recovery is just as important as training!

HealthGreatness: What is your favorite exercise?
Avril: Definitely boxing. Particularly sparring; there is just nothing else like it. Not only do you have to stay mentally alive and know what to do in each situation, you also have to be fit enough to do it. I like to compare it to a game of chess, but for fitness. It’s like the ultimate challenge. I like to be challenged haha.

HealthGreatness: What is your favorite cheat meal?
Avril: Ice cream with banana and melted chocolate from Max Brenners! You will find me there most Sundays!

HealthGreatness: You have an amazing background from being a boxer, business owner, model and of course Miss Swimsuit USA International, what is next in your career?
Avril: Thankyou! I am currently in the works of creating a women’s fitness wear line (Mathie Athletic – www.facebook.com/mathieathletic), and our gym (WickedBodz Fitness Centre – www.wickedbodz.com) is rapidly expanding, which keeps me pretty busy! But what I’m most excited about is to launch my online fitness program (BodyBAM – www.bodybam.com) very soon!! This is something I have been working on for nearly 3 years now, and it is very different to anything else out there. Fun training sessions, no starvation diets, and most importantly it’s not a one-size-fits-all program. BodyBAM is designed to educate girls and women on living a long-term healthy lifestyle and give them the knowledge to be able to implement it in a away that suits their own needs, bodies and schedule.

HealthGreatness: One thing my fans don’t know about me?
Avril: I can play the piano. Unfortunately I’m a terrible singer though (but doesn’t stop me from trying haha)

Healthgreatness: Do you have any advice for anyone aspiring to get into fitness?
Avril: Never compare your chapter 1 to someone else’s chapter 20. Or even compare yourself to anyone else at all. Find something you enjoy, and always remember why you’re doing it!
