So you had one too many last night…it happens. You were feeling like a rock star at the party but the morning after is a different story. Cottonmouth, a pounding headache, and, if you are one of the unlucky ones, vomiting and nausea plague your body. Your hangover has introduced itself in no uncertain terms.

Instead of feeling like death all day, it is time to take steps to feel like a functioning member of society again. Everyone you talk to has a “surefire” hangover remedy but what really works? Here is a list of five tried-and-true options to get feeling right as rain in no time.

  1. H2O, please.

You’ve heard it a million times, but water is essential for curing a hangover. If you do it right, it may even prevent you from having one in the first place. The key is timing. Fill two 24-ounce water bottles. Drink one before you go to sleep and the other in the morning or throughout the night. (Add a pinch of salt and sugar to the water for best results.) The dehydration alcohol causes is the major source of your headache and sluggishness. Give your body back the water it needs and you can keep the hangover headache at bay!

  1. If it’s good enough for your kids…

Pedialyte isn’t just for the toddler crowd. If parents’ night out got a little wilder than expected, join your kids for a Pedialyte at the breakfast bar. Water alone can’t get the job done but this staple can combat your dehydration, nausea, and put back the essential electrolytes you’ve lost.

  1. Pass me a banana

A long night of drinking can deplete your body’s supply of potassium and leave you feeling nasty. A banana or two can turn this around quickly. Eat a banana as soon as you get up, or better yet, before you hit the sack. These cheap eats can make a world of difference.

  1. Honey + Carbs = Relief

Honey is an antioxidant-rich miracle food and putting it on a slice of toast can soak up some of the alcohol left in your system and settle your stomach. The fructose in honey helps your body metabolize the alcohol more easily, breaking it down and out of your system. You can take the honey alone if that’s all you can stomach. Try a couple teaspoons every hour until you feel better.

  1. Soak it away

Purging your body of all the excess alcohol is the key to eliminating a hangover. A detox bath may be just the ticket for you. Add two cups of Epsom salts to a warm bath to draw out toxins and soothe a headache. Sit for at least 15 minutes to give it a chance to work. Think happy thoughts while the water and salt take care of the rest.

Overindulging isn’t ideal but you shouldn’t have to pay for it by feeling like a car hit you for the next 24 hours. Try one or all of these remedies and make the morning-after hangover a distance memory.
